Installing LightJB 4.1.2 the most stable jelly bean for Samsung Galaxy S Advance GT I9070

STOCK GB ALL THE WAY TO JB CUSTOM ROM

If you run Gingerbread, start from A directly
If you run un-rooted Jellybean, start from B
If you run rooted Jellybean with a custom kernel, start from C.
If you run rooted Jelly Bean without a custom kernel, start from B, but skip number 1 and 6.

You might want to read this before starting, it is optional though, but will give you a better idea of what you're doing.

GUIDE
This guide shall guide you through turning your suckish GB i9070 (not i9070p) to Custom ROM JB Awesomeness.

Unless your phone shipped from Russia, it probably has Gingerbread preinstalled... so, let's first Jellybeanize it.

A) JELLYBEANIZATION:
Download Odin3 from here. http://adf.ly/NDChW. Extract it into a folder.

Download Stock JB firmware from here.
http://terafile.co/222154239129/INU-I9070DDULP8-20130412134604.zip.

Extract it into a separate folder, you will get a .tar.md5 file.
Make sure you have Kies installed, but not running.
Turn your phone off, and boot into Download mode, this can be done by holding the Vol.Down+Home+Power buttons together at the same time, till it boots.
Press Volume up to continue. Plug in your phone (make sure it's at least 60% charged) .
Wait till Odin recognizes (It should say something like COM:PORT... to the left).
Click on PDA and choose the firmware (.tar.md5) that you extracted in step 2.
Click start. Right now, a virus which will fry your phone's internals is being installed... Calm down, joke.
When your phone boots into JB, and Odin says "PASS". Unplug.

NOTE: There is a chance that you will get a bootloop ( i.e. Android won't boot ). No, no, no... your phone isn't broken! Simply reboot to stock recovery by powering off, then pressing Vol.Up+Home+Power buttons together and wipe data/factory reset. It'll boot nicely

Now, you are currently on a stock Samsung Jellybean firmware, which is not rooted. This basically means that you do not have access to modifying the system files in your ROM, which means that you cannot install any custom kernel, custom recovery or a custom ROM... In section B, you will learn how to gain root access, install a custom kernel with a custom recovery.

B) ROOTING, KERNEL & TWRP/CWM:

Download Shaan's root (root.zip)  from here http://d-h.st/ook
Download Temporary (Update.zip) cwm from here  http://d-h.st/oZD

Download (CoCore-E-5.0-TWRP.zip) CoCore + TWRP (TWRP is one of the two recoveries available, we will use it in this guide because it looks less intimidating, and it's touch-enabled ) from here https://r7android.googlecode.com/files/CoCore-E-6.8-TWRP.zip

Sometimes after temp cwm you are nt able to access the Mem card which leaves you with 2 options.
1)Factory reset by going back on main screen of cwm and then look for sd card again
2)Choose it from Internal Memory.

Place all 3(or 2 if you're rooted) zip files in your external SD card
Power off. Boot into recovery by holding Vol.Up+Home+Power.
By navigating via volume buttons, choose install zip from external sd card, and install root.zip... shouldn't take long.
In the same way install update.zip. Now in a few seconds, you will get a different screen, this is Clockworkmod recovery, albeit a temporary one..
In this recovery, go to install zip, then install zip from external sd, and choose CoCore+TWRP. After installation, keep going back until the main cwm screen, and hit reboot.

NOW, Everytime you boot into recovery (which is the way to backing up and installing custom ROMs) you will get TWRP.

Now, you are rooted, with a custom kernel, and TWRP ( a custom recovery). You can either stay on stock Samsung firmware, or continue through section C, and get yourself a custom ROM.

C) INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM:

Download LightJB 4.12. from http://d-h.st/vge

Download any custom ROM (Recommendations at the end of the thread) zip and place it in the root of your external (or internal, but i prefer ext.) sd.
Boot into recovery.
Navigate by touch, press backup, and slide as instructed to make a backup.
Go back to the main screen and choose install. If the zip has been placed in ext. sd. then press on external sd and choose the appropriate zip and slide to install. If placed in internal sd, then choose internal sd from the top and go to /emmc folder, and choose zip and install.
When finished, navigate to the recovery home, and press reboot sytem.

A new official update, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with build version XXLQG, recently rolled out for the international version of Samsung Galaxy S Advance bearing model number GT-I9070.

The latest official build is a completely unbranded version of firmware and originally for the users from Italy. Users can grab the update through the Samsung KIES server. Those belonging to supported regions can also install the update manually using Odin flashing tool.

Firmware details

PDA: I9070XXLQG

CSC: I9070ITVLQ3

Version: Android 4.1.2

Build date: 29 May, 2013

Country: Italy

Region: Europe

Galaxy S Advance users who failed to install the update using official method may follow our step-by-step guide to install Android 4.1.2 XXLQG Jelly Bean manually.

Before installing the firmware, users are advised to ensure that their devices meet the following requirements.

Pre-requisites

1) Install USB Driver for Samsung Galaxy S Advance to transfer files between the Android device and the computer.

2) Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone to connect the Android device with the computer and use the Android SDK with it. [Press Menu>> Settings>> Applications. From there navigate and click on Development option and then check the USB Debugging Mode.]

3) As the tutorial is likely to wipe out all data of the phone, create a backup. If the device is having any custom recoveries such as CWM/TWRP already installed, then back up data using the recovery only.

4) The Galaxy S Advance should have above 80% battery charge.

5) The device should be factory unlocked and not locked to a particular carrier.

6) The phone will lose custom firmware with the installation of official firmware. Additionally, it will lose custom recovery which will be replaced by the stock recovery.

7) The phone will no longer belong to a rooted version once official firmware is installed.

8) The Android 4.1.2 XXLQG Jelly Bean official build is compatible only with Samsung Galaxy S Advance GT-I9070. As applying this to any incorrect variant might brick the device, verify the model number of the Galaxy device by navigating to Settings>> About Phone>> Model number.

Steps to install Android 4.1.2 XXLQG Jelly Bean on Samsung Galaxy S Advance GT-I9070

Step-1: Download Android 4.1.2 XXLQG Jelly Bean official firmware for Samsung Galaxy S Advance to the computer

Step-2: Extract the downloaded zip file using Winzip, Winrzr, 7zip or any other extracting tool to get a file with .tar.md5 extension with some other files

Step-3: Download Odin3 v3.07 which will help to install the Jelly Bean firmware. Extract the Odin zip to get Odin3 v3.07.exe and some other files

Step-4: Switch off the Galaxy S Advance and wait for five to six seconds for the vibration to confirm the power off

Step-5: Boot the phone into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together. A warning screen will appear, now press the Volume Up button to continue to enter into Download Mode

Step-6: Run Odin3 v3.07.exe as an Administrator

Step-7: Connect the Galaxy S Advance to the computer using USB cable while the device is in Download Mode. Wait for some time until Odin detects the device. When the device is connected successfully, an Added message will appear under Odin. Also, the ID: COM box in Odin will turn blue indicating all the drivers are installed successfully

Note: If the Added message does not appear, then try the USB port at the back of the computer. In case Odin still fails to recognsie the device, then re-install USB driver.

Step-8: Select these files extracted from I9070PXXLQG folder to install on the phone

a) Click the PDA button and select the .tar.md5 file

b) Click the Phone button and select file with Modem in its name

c) Click the CSC button and select the file with CSC in its name

d) Click the PIT button and select the .pit file

Note: Ignore the last three steps (b, c and d) if such files are not found.

Step-9: Verify that Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes are selected in Odin window. Also, ensure that the Re-Partition option is unchecked; select it only when a .pit file is being used

Step-10: When everything is set, hit the Start button in Odin. The installation process should begin now and would take few minutes to complete

Step-11: Once the installation process is completed, the phone will reboot automatically. And soon a PASS message with green background will appear in the extreme left box at the very top of Odin indicating successful installation. Now safely unplug the USB cable from the phone to disconnect it from the computer

Samsung Galaxy S Advance should now be updated with Android 4.1.2 XXLQG Jelly Bean official build. Head over to Settings>> About Phone>> Firmware info to verify the new software version running on the device. Additionally, re-configure the APN Settings to avoid data networks connection issues. Also change the default language to your desired language by selecting Setting>> Language and Text input.

How to Fix Bootloop Issues

1) While installing the firmware if the PASS message does not display (step-11) or the device gets stuck for a long time, then disconnect the phone from the computer. Remove the battery and re-insert it, check the USB connection, re-install the USB driver and disable KIES. Enter Download Mode and repeat the whole procedure.

2)  If bootloop occurs or the device is stuck in welcome screen logo, then boot the phone into recovery mode. To do so, press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together. In recovery mode, perform data wiping task by selecting Wipe data/factory reset then select Wipe Cache Partition. Reboot the phone in normal mode by selecting reboot system now. When the phone boots up, it should be running on the official build. In recovery mode, use Volume keys to scroll between the options and use the Power button to select the particular option. Performing wiping task will erase the internal memory of the device.

Adding Your Company’s Mail Exchange Server to Your Cellphone Enables Remote Data Wiping Erasing

Adding Your Company’s Email Synch/ Microsoft Exchange Server to Your Cellphone Enables Remote Wiping

You had IT set up Microsoft Exchange Server on your personal phone so you could get corporate email and stay in touch. You also, likely unbeknownst to you, gave them the power to remotely control and wipe your phone.
If you've linked your personal smartphone to your company's network via their Microsoft Exchange Server you need to be extra diligent about backing up your data to your personal computer or syncing it to the cloud. In doing so you gave them the power to control your phone from afar, turn functions on and off, and nuke it from space. NPR reports:
The phone doesn't need to download any new software. All that's necessary is for the phone's user to configure it to receive e-mail from a Microsoft Exchange Server - the kind most big companies use.
Once that's been set up, an IT department has the capability to wipe the phone and turn off functions like Bluetooth, the Web browser and even the phone's camera.
"The reason why you see such a long list of various policies and controls is because different organizations want those controls," says Adam Glick, senior technical product manager for Microsoft Exchange.
He points to the peace of mind the system offers to people whose phones have been stolen, and who can rest assured that all the personal information contained inside can be erased from afar.
Glick says employers sometimes need remote control of other functions, like the camera, to prevent leaks. "If you're having an important meeting about the future finances of the organization and people put that up on a slide, and someone might take out their camera phone and take a picture. And then they might go and, say, post that to the Internet," Glick says.
If you're thinking that sounds like a far fetched scenario that wouldn't affect most people, consider how a simple toggle in the upgrade of a Lifehacker reader's corporate email server altered his phone.
If your company has an up-to-date Exchange server, merely adding your Exchange-based work email to your iPhone also enables a remote wipe option.
I first discovered this when my boss (the network admin) upgraded Exchange and accidentally disabled all of our phones' camera features (since "disable camera" was the default for some reason). Exchange can also enforce passcode complexity and change frequency requirements, and/or force you to enable the feature that wipes your phone if someone repeatedly enters the wrong code.
There's also an option to remotely wipe all data from the phone at any time. If your company has the Outlook Web App configured, you can view which devices have access to your email and wipe any of them remotely yourself.
While these features exist for a reason (such as wiping a phone with sensitive corporate data when it is reported missing) that doesn't change the fact that an accidental activation could wipe your personal data. Back up your contacts, photos, and other personal data on a regular basis to ensure such accidents don't deep six your data. Visit the link below to read the full article at NPR.

How to update Galaxy S Advance with Official Android 4.1.2 JellyBean Firmware

Finally after a long wait, Samsung has started pushing up Android Jelly Bean firmware updates for Samsung Galaxy S Advance users. This phone initially launched with GingerBread firmware didn’t even receive ICS update. The first country to get jellybean android 4.1.2 firmware update is Russia. Firmware updates for other regions like India, UK, US, etc will be released later, but why wait? With our tutorial given here, you can flash your Galaxy S advance phone GT-I9070 with official Android 4.1.2 firmware. So, if you’re like me, impatient and want to get your hands on the goodness of JellyBean, go ahead.

Requirements:

  • Fully charged Galaxy S Advance phone – Make sure your phone is fully charged or atleast >60% battery capacity.
  • USB Data Cable.
  • Laptop/Computer
  • Backup your android phone because after flashing this firmware, we need to factory reset our phone.
  • Risk: Sometimes things may go wrong, so proceed at your own risk.

  1. Download XXLPY JellyBean firmware for Galaxy S Advance from here (resume, download manager-supported mirror link), or here (hotfile). (Both the links are for the same file so download only one. The resume supported 1st link is highly compressed in comparison to the 2nd hotfile link, but after extracting, both these links produce the same file of same size). Update: Recently, another Jelly Bean firmware for Galaxy S Advance has been released. The latest one is XXLPZ which can be downloaded from here (hotfile). You’ve to download either XXLPY or XXLPZ.
  2. Download ODIN for Samsung Galaxy S Advance from here.
  3. Extract the downloaded files in step 1 and 2.
  4. Turn off your phone.
  5. Now press volume down key+ home key + power button togethersimultaneously for few seconds until you get haptic feedback from your phone i.e. until your phone vibrates to enter download mode. Now press volume up key to confirm that you want to proceed ahead when asked to do so on the screen.
  6. Launch ODIN program on your computer. Make sure Samsung Kies program is not running on your computer at that time. If it is, just close Kies.
  7. Connect Galaxy S advance phone with usb data cable to your comuter.
  8. In ODIN program, you’ll see a box colored with com number indicated. In the log section of ODIN program, it’ll display Added message. This indicates that your phone is successfully detected by ODIN program.
  9. Click on PDA button and browse to the firmware extracted folder and select the firmware file. (It will be either XXLPY or XXLPZ depending upon the firmware you download in 1st step –HOME_I9070XXLPY_I9070SERLPY_660490_REV00….. . OR…..I9070XXLPZ_I9070SERLPZ…. )
  10. Hit on Start Button. You’ll see the download progress bar moving on your phone. Wait for sometime. Since this is major release, you might have to wait a little longer.
  11. After flashing everything, ODIN will reboot your phone automatically and display PASS message in its box.
  12. Done. When phone starts again, it’ll take time to start. It’ll display that Android is upgrading and optimizing apps.
  13. You’ll be presented with Set-up wizard where you’ll have to enter certain details, select your language, enter your samsung account details, etc.
  14. After completing everything, you’ll find that all your previous apps, messages, contacts are intact. Well, don’t be hopeful because you might face several problems like no network connectivity after flashing jelly bean firmware on Galaxy S Advance, or the UI screen very laggy, or excessive RAM usage, etc. To solve such issues and to experience speed Jellybean butter effect, you have to factory reset your phone. So, Switch Off your phone. Press Volume up key + Home button + power key togethersimultaneously to enter recovery mode. Use volume up/down key to navigate through the options and power key to select/execute a particular option. SelectWipe Cache here. Now select Factory Reset. Now Select Reboot. Galaxy S Advance will reboot in normal mode. After successful start, you’ll be again presented with Set-up wizard. Here, select English language first of all as the defaul will be russian. Now proceed as usual with other details.
  15. Done! Now enjoy and experience JellyBean on Galaxy S Advance phone in any country. Do tell us what’s new in jellybean for galaxy s advance. We’ve found speed improvement, RAM addition (about 100mb more RAM), Zoom support in Camera, Pop up Play support, Smart Dial feature, Shortcuts on Lockscreen, Nature UX Touchwhiz UI, etc. Unfortunately, Smart Stay feature is not there.
